Rays overcome three deficits to defeat Blue Jays

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. _ Monday wasn't all about Willy Adames joining Jake Bauers in the big leagues as the core of the Rays future.

Stepping up as they stepped down in class in facing the similarly struggling Blue Jays, the Rays rolled to an 8-4 victory.

And they had to earn it, coming back from deficits of 1-0, 3-1 and 4-3 before taking advantage of some Toronto sloppiness and scoring three in the seventh.

Ryan Yarbrough, getting to make the start rather than following an opener, overcame his own rough beginning, working six innings, retiring eight of his last nine.

Down 1-0, the Rays pulled even in the first when Matt Duffy led off with a single, Bauers doubled and Joey Wendle delivered a sac fly.

They pulled even again in the third when Bauers led off with a walk, and they rapped three straight two-out hits, by Wendle, Adames (in his first game after being called back up to stay), and Mallex Smith.

And they went ahead to stay in the fourth when Duffy slapped a one-out single and Bauers followed with a two-run homer, his first since making his debut on Thursday.

Sergio Romo finished for the Rays, reaching his 10-year mark in the majors in style.

The Rays (30-35) needed the win, having lost nine of their last 10, their worst 10-game stretch since 2016.
