NEW YORK _ Jordan Montgomery didn't make it through the third inning, and the Yankees failed miserably with runners in scoring position on Sunday afternoon.
Despite receiving some solid relief pitching, the Yankees saw their six-game winning streak snapped at Yankee Stadium, where the Rays won, 5-3, before 41,457 fans.
With one out in the ninth, Brett Gardner singled and Clint Frazier walked against Rays closer Jesus Colome. But Aaron Judge (0-for-4, walk, 2 strikeouts) fouled out and Matt Holliday grounded out.
Ronald Torreyes accounted for all the Yankees' runs with a two-run homer in the second and an RBI double in the third off Rays starter Jacob Faria, who didn't make it out of the fifth inning.
In just 2 2/3 innings, Montgomery (7-6) was charged with four runs on six hits and two walks.
The Yankees (56-47) failed to capitalize with runners at second and third and none out in the fifth, when Judge struck out, Holliday popped out and Didi Gregorius grounded out.
With the bases loaded and one out in the sixth, the Yanks were kept off the board again as Gardner grounded into a fielder's choice and Clint Frazier flied out.
Catcher Austin Romine left the game with a bruised left hand, after being drilled by a Steve Cishek 1-and-2 pitch in the sixth. Earlier in the game, Romine took a bounced pitch off the throat that had him writhing in pain at home plate.
