Jan. 15--Ray Rice and the Baltimore Ravens were scheduled to present their arguments Thursday in a grievance hearing over $3.5 million in back pay being sought by the disgraced running back, cut from the team in September when video surfaced of him striking his fiancee.
But according to ProFootballTalk's Mike Florio, Rice and the Ravens actually reached a settlement "several days ago."
Florio wrote on Thursday: "The term 'settled' implies money changed hands. Chances are that the amount will not be disclosed publicly, which is common when money changes hands to put to rest a legal claim."
Rice was originally suspended two games by the NFL in connection with the domestic-violence incident, based on a surveillance video that showed him dragging his now-wife, Janay, out of an elevator at an Atlantic City casino. When a second, more graphic video surfaced, the league increased his suspension to an indefinite period. Rice and his representatives argued that action was a violation of the collective bargaining agreement because it penalized him twice for the same transgression.
A former federal judge acting as an arbitrator in the matter ultimately sided with Rice on that point and he was reinstated. Rice has yet to be signed by a team.
