Ray Parlour picks Arsenal team and best player of the decade - with no current stars

Ray Parlour included the likes of Jack Wilshere, Cesc Fabregas, Alexis Sanchez and Robin van Persie when he was asked to name his best Arsenal XI of the 2010s, with none of the current crop making the cut.

The former midfielder played for the Gunners for 13 seasons between 1992 and 2004, and was part of Arsene Wenger's 'Invincible' side which picked up the 2003/04 Premier League title, Parlour's third.

These days Parlour can frequently be heard as a pundit on talkSPORT, and when the radio station asked him to name his Gunners select XI from the past decade he came up with some interesting choices.

Parlour picked Petr Cech in goal, behind a back four of Nacho Monreal, Per Mertesacker, Laurent Koscielny and Bacary Sagna, with the 46-year-old admitting the middle third of the pitch was the toughest to pick, even though it includes his pick for player of the decade.

“Midfield was the hardest position. I’ve gone with a diamond, it’s a very attacking midfield," said Parlour .

“I’ve picked Wilshere, I know he had his injury problems but he was an excellent servant for the club.

"Santi Cazorla, what player he was, he’s got to be in the team, and (Aaron) Ramsey would probably be player of the decade for Arsenal , for me. I picked Fabregas in the No.10 role."

Of Mikel Arteta's current side - who head into Wednesday night's home clash with Manchester United in 12th place in the table - then perhaps Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang would have the greatest chance of featuring, but Parlour decided to go a different way.

“So I went with Sanchez, who was excellent when he was at Arsenal, and I went with Van Persie," he continued.

“Aubameyang? No. I would pick Van Persie over Aubameyang as a player, he was a top-class player.”
