Ray Parlour names the Arsenal star who should replace Granit Xhaka as captain against Liverpool

Arsenal icon Ray Parlour has predicted who will wear the captain's armband for Unai Emery's side against Liverpool, with Granit Xhaka set to miss the match.

The Gunners captain has been surrounded in controversy following unsavoury scenes at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday, where he was booed off the field and responded by telling supporters to 'f*** off'.

Emery has since urged the Switzerland international to apologise to the fans for his behaviour but confirmed that the midfielder would not be part of the squad for Wednesday's Carabao Cup fourth-round tie with Liverpool.

That leaves the North London side with a decision to make on who will wear the armband, with the choice having increased importance following the events at the weekend.

While admitting that Hector Bellerin and Rob Holding are candidates for the honour, Parlour has predicted that Mesut Ozil will be skipper for the clash if he is named in the starting line-up.

“It might be Ozil. It will be interesting, it could be Bellerin because he will probably come in and he’s been there a number of years now but whether he’s captain material, I’m not too sure,” he told Sky Sports’ The Debate.

“Rob Holding is another one, the centre-half, can he be captain material? I think it will be interesting to see who is captain but if Ozil starts, I think he will be the one who gets the captain’s armband."

Ozil was named by Emery as one of the five leaders in the squad earlier this season but has featured just twice this term, with his continued absence raising questions from the Arsenal faithful.
