Ray Kennedy dead: Arsenal and Liverpool legend passes away at the age of 70

Arsenal are mourning the death of former player Ray Kennedy who has passed away at the age of 70.

Kennedy made over 200 appearances for the Gunners and was part of the side that won the league title and FA Cup double in the 1970/71 season. He also won the Inter-Cities Fairs cup during his spell at Highbury.

The former England forward had been battling Parkinson’s disease in recent years.

A product of Arsenal’s academy, Kennedy left the north London club to join Liverpool in 1974 where he went on to achieve even more success.

Former Reds striker John Alrdridge led the tributes via social media tweeting: "Yet another magnificent Ex LFC star has passed away folks.

"Ray Kennedy what a player and lovely bloke who suffered so much with Parkinson’s disease for most of his life. He will definitely never walk alone. RIP Ray ynwa."

The left-side midfielder was an integral part of a highly successful period for Liverpool in the late 1970’s and early ‘80’s.

During his time on Merseyside he won five league titles, three European Cups and the UEFA Cup.

After leaving the Reds in 1982 he enjoyed spells with Swansea City, Hartlepool and Cypriot team Pezoporikos.

He was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease in November 1986 after suffering with numerous health issues.

Liverpool's official statistician, Ged Rea, tweeted: "RIP Ray Kennedy. One of the legendary Liverpool midfielders of any generation.

"His teammates and opponents knew just how brilliant he was. He fought a horrible illness for many years with great dignity and resolve. Truly gutted to hear this news today."
