Ray J has delivered bombshell allegations about his sex tape with Kim Kardashian, weeks after the reality star and her mother, Kris Jenner, sued him for defamation.
The rapper made the accusations in a countersuit filed earlier this week. He accused the mother-daughter duo of spending “two decades peddling the false narrative” that their infamous tape, released in 2007, was “leaked against [Kim’s] will”.
The Kardashians have long maintained that the tape, which catapulted Kim to notoriety and was dubbed Kim Kardashian, Superstar, was mysteriously leaked by an unknown source.
Ray J has pushed back against that narrative in the past, but his recent countersuit lays bare alleged details around Kris’ supposed masterminding of the tape’s release.
According to the suit, Ray J and Kim filmed themselves having sex in Cabo and discussed publicly releasing the video together in 2006.
The rapper claims Kim “insisted” that Kris “be in charge of the tape’s release and commercial exploitation”. He claimed the momager went as far as actually watching the tape before the trio “collectively” decided to leak it.
The tape had already made waves by the time Keeping Up With The Kardashians aired, and it’s from that point that Ray J claims the family started “lying about their role in the tape’s release”.
As for why Ray J is dredging up the tape, it’s in direct response to Kris and Kim filing a defamation lawsuit against him last month.
That lawsuit was filed in reaction to “reckless” claims Ray J made about the Kardashian pair supposedly being the subject of a federal investigation.
It cites two instances in which the rapper allegedly defamed the duo. The first was when he said they were “being charged for racketeering” in the 2024 documentary United States vs. Sean Combs.
In the second instance, Ray J allegedly doubled-down on the racketeering claim when he said the “feds were coming” for the Kardashians in an Instagram livestream last September.
“No such federal investigation exists,” Kim and Kris’ lawyer, Alex Spiro said when filing the lawsuit, which marked the first time the Kardashians had ever lodged a defamation claim.
“No law enforcement agency has initiated any criminal proceedings … against Ms. Kardashian or Ms. Jenner, and no credible evidence whatsoever supports these inflammatory allegations,” Spiro added.
The connection between that defamation case and Ray J’s mention of the sex tape in his countersuit remains murky. For his part, Ray J claims Kris and Kim’s lawsuit is retaliation because he “no longer wants to play along with their tall tale” about the tape.
As a result, he claimed the lawsuit was their way of launching “exact retribution” on him.
But Spiro wasn’t convinced, describing the countersuit as a “disjointed rambling distraction” in a statement to Us Weekly.
“After realising he is losing the case and losing his way, this disjointed rambling distraction is not intimidating anyone. Ray J will lose this frivolous case too,” Spiro said.
Ray J is seeking $1 million ($1.5 million AUD) in damages from Kim and Kris as well as legal fees. The amount the pair are seeking in their original suit has not been disclosed.
