Ray Houghton explains Jack Charlton's surprising reaction to famous Euro '88 goal

Ray Houghton has explained how Jack Charlton surprised him with his reaction to his famous goal in Ireland's historic victory over England at Euro '88.

Jackie's Army sent Ireland fans into dreamland after Houghton famously put the ball in the English net on this day, 32 years ago.

And the Ireland legend was left stunned after the final whistle when Charlton told him not to 'ever do that again'.

Houghton told Uefa TV: "I remember after the game Jack said to me 'don't ever do that again' and I said 'what, score against England?'

"Because obviously he's an Englishman and he had won the World Cup.

"But he said 'score that early, that was the longest 84 minutes of my life.'

"When I actually scored, the cameraman and whoever was directing it for TV, didn't go on me but on John Aldridge because they must've thought 'it couldn't have been him he's never scored with his head before'.

"I wasn't a very good goalscorer and I wasn't noted for scoring with my head but just being in the right position at the right time.

"When Jack was rubbing his head, everyone was wondering what had happened, he actually jumped up too quick and hit his head on top of the dugout."

Although England were searing hot favourites going into the group stage clash, Houghton maintains that the Irish players believed they could pull off the shock result.

Houghton added: "We believed in ourselves as players that we were more than good enough to compete against the English team.

"The pressure was on them, no one outside of Ireland thought we would do much though we certainly did.

"If you look at all of our players that started that game, every one of us had won trophies at some stage in their career.

"For us as players it was a good start to the campaign but no more than that, we had to get ready for the next game."
