Ray Horton plans on making Redskins DBs uncomfortable to encourage improvement

The Washington Redskins have an interesting mix of veteran leadership and upside along the defensive backfield.

On one side, a veteran like Josh Norman is a well-known commodity. Upstarts like Troy Apke are still on the rise and learning.

New defensive backs coach Ray Horton intends to upend both in the name of improvement, per NBC Sports Washington:

“I’ve asked them to do a lot of things different, which gets them out of their comfort zone….they’ve got to trust I have their best interests. I trust them already.”

Horton was a coordinator from 2011-16, so he was a massive hire for the Redskins, even if it went a bit under the radar.

And Horton has a unique task in front of him, from rejuvenating an entire pass defense while juggling some of the top-paid players at their position and also bringing along some up-and-coming talents.

It’s not an easy task, though that would explain why the Redskins brought on Horton in the first place. That he’s already targeting shaking things up by removing comfort zones says it all.
