Ray Dempsey walks away from Limerick football post

LIMERICK have moved quickly to replace Ray Dempsey after he walked away from the Division 2 basement side following a string of poor results.

Kerry man Mark Fitzgerald, who was part of Dempsey’s backroom team, has been appointed for the remainder of the season as Limerick bid to upset he odds and avoid relegation to Division 2.

Former Mayo star Dempsey’s decision to quit came amid player unrest over his tenure to date.

Dempsey had only been in the job for four months and been in charge for five league games. The rest of his backroom team have also left their posts.

Limerick gained their first point of the campaign against Meath last time out, following a draw, but suffered heavy defeats by Derry and Dublin, a narrow loss to Louth and a six goal, 24 points hammering by Cork.

Their final two games are at home to Kildare and away to Clare, the two sides above them, both on two points.

This means they would escape relegation with two wins.

Dempsey took over from Billy Lee, who guided Limerick to promotion last year.
