Ravers branded 'covidiots' for attending illegal party in Formby

Around 100 people who attended an illegal rave in Merseyside last night were branded ‘irresponsible’ and ‘stupid’ by locals.

Merseyside police confirmed that more than 60 people were issued fines and two were arrested,on suspicion of possession of Class A and B drugs, after going to a rave in Formby last night.

Officers estimated around 100 people were at the illegal rave, near Formby beach, and DJ equipment and lighting was seized.

In total 64 people were issued with fines for breaking coronavirus regulations but police say many more ‘put others at risk of catching covid’.

ECHO readers have shared their opinions on the party with many calling those involved "selfish".

Some readers suggested fines are not a good enough deterrent.

Judy Wall said: "I despise and hate these selfish covidiots with a passion. I'd stick them all in jail.

"A friend is in hospital with this. A neighbour died last week and my cousin's husband died 3 weeks ago. It's not a hoax. It's not a game, it's bloody scary."

While ECHO user BrownMick commented: "Do what the Isle of Man do, jail them."

And user TabloidTatter added: "Instead of just fining them, test them, incarcerate them in a hotel at their expense and also tried by a magistrate, and let them out after 10 days if covid free. We're too lenient on them."

Jay Newby-Gallagher added: "Not even surprising anymore. This pandemic has really shown how dense and stupid a lot of people are."

And Maria McBride said: "Must have frozen their brains having a beach rave at night in February. Fines well deserved as broken the law."

While Jackie Buckley wrote: "The police are following the rules that this government has set and they are doing their job.

"It's the actions of the irresponsible people who knew they were breaking the law but carried on regardless. They could well take the virus home to their families. What then?? Loss of loved ones."

Tony Spelman commented: "This might be quite a controversial point of view.....but if we all wore visors/masks, adhered to the guidance and didn't take the complete and utter p***....we wouldn't have a lockdown in the first place.

"To many c**** f***** thinking they can do what they want....great...it’s c***** up me going abroad four times already....it's not about blaming the police or anyone else, it's about time we looked at our own behaviour and took a bit of personal responsibility as a community."

Glenys Ryder said: "Police only their job we just want to get back to some normality."

Deputy Chief Constable Serena Kennedy said: "Those who attended the event in Formby last night were astoundingly irresponsible.

"They were not only breaking the law but have put anyone that they come into contact with over the next few days, including their friends, family and colleagues, at risk of catching and spreading coronavirus with their utterly selfish behaviour."
