Ravenshead homeowner defends unauthorised extension which neighbours are 'sick of seeing'

A homeowner who built an extension has defended the reason behind going ahead with its construction despite not having planning permission. However, frustrated neighbours responded by saying "you do not flout planning rules" and welcomed the council's decision calling for its removal.

A planning enforcement notice was served to the owner of the property in Rowan Avenue, Ravenshead, on March 30 last year. It required the removal of an unauthorised dormer extension and either removal of the front boundary fence or its reduction in height to one metre.

A report to Gedling Borough Council's planning committee said: "The use of the flat-roof on a build of this scale, combined with the existing rear single storey flat-roof extension, is an incongruous addition that does not reflect the character or appearance of the dwelling. In addition, there is an overbearing impact on the neighbour to the south of the property."

The homeowner, Steve Coleman, appealed against the notice with the Planning Inspectorate in relation to the dormer extension. The appeal has been dismissed and the notice has been upheld.

The "overly prominent" extension must now be removed. Residents spoke of the ordeal after the decision was made.

Angie Barker, who has lived in Rowan Avenue for 40 years, said: "It impacts next door really bad. I'm sick of seeing it. You do not flout planning rules. It is about time they did start clamping down on it."

Another resident, who asked to remain anonymous, added: "I wouldn't have thought anyone in this day and age would not know that you need planning permission."

Speaking at his property Mr Coleman, of Rowan Avenue, responded to concerns. He told Nottinghamshire Live: "It has not had planning [permission]. It was a miscommunication. It is just going to have to come back a bit, it's not an issue. We will abide by the decision.

"There are other properties that are basically the same. As far as I'm concerned I did what other people in this area have done. There was a misunderstanding. We will abide by the decision."
