The NFL and NFLPA agreed to concessions for this unusual offseason, one of which was a roster reduction for training camp. With a need to trim their roster down to 80 players, the Baltimore Ravens began that process quickly. The team announced via Twitter they waived defensive end Michael Onuoha, bringing the Ravens’ roster to 88 players.
Onuoha was signed as an undrafted free agent out of Texas A&M-Commerce last year but wasn’t able to make the 53-man roster. Instead, Onuoha was placed on the practice squad in November and eventually signed a reserves/futures deal with Baltimore this January.
According to an NFL memo acquired by Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer, the league is allowing teams one of two options to trim their roster. The first and most logical option is to have the roster cut down to 80 players by July 28. However, the other option would allow a team to have 90 players on their roster at the start of training camp but it comes with a ton of other hoops to jump through, including separating the groups and limiting practicing times.
The Ravens were already down to 89 players after waiving linebacker Jake Ryan in June and Onuoha was cut so quickly after the memo was sent. While Baltimore hasn’t yet publicly stated which option they’ll take, they appear set up to trim their roster down to 80 before training camp officially begins on the 28th.
