Ravens tried to trade for Courtland Sutton before signing Odell Beckham

Before signing wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. to a one-year contract worth up to $18 million, the Baltimore Ravens attempted to trade for Denver Broncos wide receiver Courtland Sutton.

“At one point, there appeared to be a deal to be made for Courtland Sutton, but the Denver Broncos decided they didn’t want to trade him,” The Athletic‘s Jeff Zrebiec reported on Thursday evening (subscription required for link).

Sutton, 27, is three years younger than Beckham, and he’s coming off a healthy season (OBJ sat out the 2022 season after tearing his ACL in the 2021 Super Bowl). Sutton is under contract with the Broncos through the 2025 season — he’ll have a salary cap hit just north of $18 million this year.

Broncos coach Sean Payton said at the NFL owners’ meetings last month that the team does not plan to trade Sutton or fellow receiver Jerry Jeudy.

“[I]t’s not something that we’re interested in doing,” Payton said of the possibility of trading Sutton or Jeudy this offseason.

If Denver does not make any trades to acquire more picks, the team will have five selections to use in the 2023 NFL draft later this month.
