Ravens to sign former Broncos pass rusher Shane Ray to 1-year deal

The Baltimore Ravens clearly aren’t super excited about the state of their pass rush heading into training camp. For the second consecutive day, the Ravens have signed a free-agent pass rusher to bolster their underwhelming unit.

Baltimore is set to sign Shane Ray, a former first-round pick in the 2015 NFL draft.

Ray joins Pernell McPhee as the recent additions to the Ravens’ outside linebacker corps. With the selection of Jaylon Ferguson in the third round of the 2019 NFL draft, Baltimore has added three players to a group that became very shallow during the first wave of free agency.

Much like McPhee, Ray has been limited by injuries, including two trips to injured reserve. In four years with the Broncos, Ray had 14 sacks, 94 combined tackles, two forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries, including one returned for a touchdown.

While it’s expected Matt Judon will start at one of the outside linebacker spots, the competition for the other starting role is heating up. McPhee and Ray will compete with Tim Williams, Ferguson and Tyus Bowser for the starting nod. Though the hope is that Williams, Ferguson or Bowser steps up this season and hits his full potential, the Ravens don’t seem willing to let it play out without any backup options.
