A year after a "day-to-day" injury to then-rookie Breshad Perriman turned into a season-long melodrama regarding the health and availability of the wide receiver, the Ravens are still waiting for their former No. 1 draft pick to play _ or even practice.
Three weeks into training camp _ and one day after Terrell Suggs came off the same physically unable to perform list Perriman and three others still occupy _ Ravens coach John Harbaugh said he is not sure when the former Central Florida standout will be back on the field.
Asked if he had any update on Perriman, Harbaugh said after practice in Owings Mills on Tuesday, "I wish I did. They had talked about this being the time frame, right about now, mid August, when he would be back. That was the date I was given back in June.
"He's running. He's on the ground running right now, but I haven't been told that he's going to be back to practice tomorrow. I'm just like the fans. I'm waiting for him to be back out there. When he's ready, he'll be back out there."
Perriman was initially hurt on the first day of training camp last summer, with a knee injury that was later announced to be a PCL strain. It was reported on Oct. 1 that he had undergone arthroscopic surgery.
After trying to come back later in the season, Perriman reinjured the knee and was put on injured reserve. Perriman then sustained a partially torn ACL during organized team activities in June and had a stem-cell injection in order to be ready for the season.
While the Ravens signed free agent Mike Wallace in the offseason, and drafted Chris Moore in the fourth round, they were still counting on Perriman to be a starter in 2016. At this point, it seems that having Perriman back for a practice will be considered a positive step.
Quarterback Joe Flacco, who is coming off surgery to repair tears to both his ACL and MCL, said Tuesday that he has been able to build some chemistry with Wallace and some of the team's other receivers. Perriman is still a question mark.
Asked if he can develop chemistry with Perriman quickly when he returns, Flacco said, "It's tough to say. It's tough for me to even worry about right now because we have so many other guys that we have to worry about getting better and getting on top of it.
"But he's definitely one of the guys I wish [would be out there]. I haven't really spent a ton of time with him out on the football field. Just really last offseason. It would definitely nice to get him out here at some point. At the same time, you can't bring him back too early if he's not going to be ready."
