The Baltimore Ravens’ offense clearly goes through its tight ends. So, it’s no shock that Baltimore wants to keep Nick Boyle in town for the foreseeable future. According to the Ravens’ Twitter account, they’ve agreed to a two-year contract extension with Boyle, which will lock Boyle up through the 2023 season.
Boyle has been one of the best blocking tight ends in the game over the last few years. He’s a big part of what Baltimore does at the line of scrimmage and is a key factor in the success of the rushing attack. But Boyle is also an underrated pass catcher too, hauling in 120 passes for 1,047 receiving yards and four touchdown receptions over his six years in the league.
Set to earn $7.8 million against the Ravens’ 2021 salary cap, some had wondered if Boyle would be a cap casualty this offseason. But Boyle truly proved his worth to the team after suffering a season-ending knee injury in Week 10. While offensive coordinator Greg Roman did his best, the offense never fully recovered from Boyle’s absence. Coach John Harbaugh said he’s hopeful Boyle and a few other injured players will be available by training camp at his end-of-season press conference.
With fellow tight end Mark Andrews in the final year of his rookie deal and likely to earn a large contract, Baltimore had been staring down both Boyle and Andrews potentially leaving next offseason. While Andrews certainly has to be in the Ravens’ long-term plans as well, there’s a little less pressure on general manager Eric DeCosta’s shoulders now.
