Ravens sign G Parker Ehinger after Andre Smith opts out of 2020 season

The Baltimore Ravens added some depth to their training camp roster, signing guard Parker Ehinger on Tuesday, according to the team’s Twitter account. The move comes after offensive tackle Andre Smith used the voluntary opt-out provision agreed to by the NFL and NFLPA to sit out the 2020 NFL season.

This isn’t Ehinger’s first time with Baltimore, however. Ehinger has been on the Ravens’ practice squad previously and started one game last season. He started a total of five games for the Kansas City Chiefs over the 2016-2017 seasons.

While the move to add another offensive lineman makes sense after Smith’s decision to opt-out this season, Ehinger isn’t known for playing tackle. Though he did play both right and left tackle at the University of Cincinnati, he hasn’t played the position in the NFL. With Smith out, the Ravens are sorely lacking experienced depth behind starting offensive tackles Ronnie Stanley and Orlando Brown Jr. However, with free agency a distant memory this offseason as training camps open, there aren’t a ton of capable offensive tackles left on the market which might have forced Baltimore’s hand to go with someone they had more experience with.

Though the Ravens signed Ehinger, they likely aren’t done adjusting their training camp roster this offseason and could still look for improved depth at tackle.
