Ravens bring back LB Josh Bynes

The Baltimore Ravens have seen their defense go from No. 1 last year to one of the worst units in the league in 2019. They’ve allowed 300 yards passing in three consecutive games and have given up 500-plus net yards in back-to-back games en route to a 2-2 record.

Though coach John Harbaugh believes the issues stem from players trying to do too much and he thinks it can be corrected, the Ravens are making roster moves to try to spark improvement. On Tuesday, they cut former third-round pick Tim Williams and brought in several players for workouts.

The Ravens today announced they signed one of those workout players, linebacker Josh Bynes.

This isn’t Bynes’ first stint with Baltimore — he played for them from 2011-2013, including the Ravens’ Super Bowl XLVII victory, before heading to the Detroit Lions.

Bynes brings valuable starting experience to Baltimore’s linebacker corps — a unit that was thin to start the season and only got thinner with Otaro Alaka heading to injured reserve last week. The Ravens also signed former Steelers linebacker L.J. Fort this week.

Over his eight-year career with Baltimore, Detroit and the Arizona Cardinals, Bynes has started 40 games. He has 319 total tackles, 3.5 sacks, two interceptions, three forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries, including one returned for a touchdown.

Though the Ravens have signed Bynes and Fort this week, they might not be done, having brought in defensive tackles and pass rushers for workouts.
