Ravens sign former Chiefs return specialist De’Anthony Thomas

Coach John Harbaugh noted he had not been pleased with the Baltimore Ravens’ special teams units in Week 9 against the New England Patriots. The Ravens saw poor kick and punt coverage, and kicker Justin Tucker missed an extra point for just the second time in his career. But the costliest mistake came from punt returner Cyrus Jones’ fumble that helped the Patriots get back into the game when it was 17-0 Baltimore.

Baltimore seems interested in providing a little competition, signing former Kansas City Chiefs return specialist De’Anthony Thomas. To make room on the 53-man roster, the Ravens waived cornerback Maurice Canady.

This is Thomas’ sixth season in the NFL, all previously with the Chiefs. While he’s caught just one pass over that time, he’s returned 85 punts for 751 yards and a touchdown, as well as 58 kickoffs for 1,422 yards.

While it’s unclear if Thomas will automatically take over for Jones, it’s going to apply a little pressure at the kick and return specialist spots regardless. Hopefully, it’s what’s needed to keep the ball from hitting the ground, especially in important games.
