Ravens release Pro Bowl safety Eric Weddle

In a surprising move, the Baltimore Ravens cut perennial Pro Bowl safety Eric Weddle on Tuesday.

The 34-year-old had one year left on a contract that would have paid him over $9 million. The Ravens decided that was too much even though Weddle still played well in 2018. A year after picking off six passes, he did not record an interception while starting all 16 games.

His release saves the team $7.5 million in salary cap room.

Weddle joins QB Joe Flacco as veteran leaders dispatched by new Ravens GM Eric DeCosta since the season ended. The defending AFC North champs will look quite a bit different in 2019.

Weddle took the move in stride:

The highly respected veteran will be free to sign with any team when the new league year begins March 13. He will join a crowded safety market that includes Landon Collins, Earl Thomas, Tyrann Mathieu and Lamarcus Joyner.
