Baltimore Ravens offensive coordinator Greg Roman has spent the last few months focusing on the future and coming up with new and creative ways to unleash quarterback Lamar Jackson upon the NFL. But while Jackson occupies Roman’s present and future, he’s happy to talk about his past and one player in particular.
In a Zoom call with members of the media on Tuesday, Roman spoke about having a “great experience” coaching quarterback Colin Kaepernick and how he’ll “always be rooting for” a player who had his best years under Roman with the San Franciso 49ers between 2011-2014. Kaepernick went 32-15-1 as a starter with Roman as his offensive coordinator, completing just over 60% of his passes for 8,415 yards with 50 touchdowns. He also added 1,576 yards and 10 rushing touchdowns.
“Colin was just a treat to coach, and I wish him the best,” Roman said. “So however that goes, it goes, and I’m certainly in his corner rooting for him.”
Wishing Kaepernick the best, Roman also added that he hoped he got the chance to play in the NFL again “if that’s what he chooses to do.”
Kaepernick has not played in the NFL since the end of the 2016 season, a season in which he protested the violence by police against Black people by kneeling during the national anthem. Kaepernick’s cause has won widespread support across the U.S. in the weeks since the death of George Floyd and has led to such prominent figures as the NFL commissioner Roger Goodell himself speaking of how they hope Kaepernick can return to the NFL.
“If he wants to resume his career in the NFL, then obviously it’s gonna take a team to make that decision,” Goodell said in ESPN’s “Return of Sports” special earlier this month. “But I welcome that, support a club making that decision, and encourage them to do that.”
The Ravens are obviously set at quarterback with Jackson, but they are one of the teams pundits and oddsmakers have named as a good fit in recent weeks.
