Ravens moving on from veteran running back Justin Forsett

Less than a month after re-signing Justin Forsett, the Ravens are moving on from the veteran running back. This time, it's likely for good.

With rookie running back Kenneth Dixon nearing a return, the Ravens informed Forsett of his release on Tuesday. The move seemed inevitable after Forsett, who started the first three games this year but was ineffective, was made a game-day inactive in last Sunday's loss to the Oakland Raiders.

"Baltimore will always have a special place in my heart," Forsett wrote on his Twitter account.

The release caps an up-and-down couple of months for Forsett, who had seemingly resurrected his career in Baltimore. The 30-year-old was released on Sept. 3 as part of the team's roster cuts to get down to 53 players. However, the move was more of a procedural one and the team planned to re-sign him all along.

That occurred two days later, and Forsett began the season as the starter. However, he averaged just 98 rushing yards on 31 carries over the first three games.

Terrance West (Northwestern High, Towson University) started in Forsett's place Sunday and rushed for 113 yards and a touchdown. Dixon, a fourth-round pick who played well in the preseason, has made good progress from a knee injury and is expected to make his NFL debut Sunday against the Washington Redskins. The Ravens also still have Javorius Allen, a fourth-round pick last year, on their roster.

Forsett, meanwhile, is a free agent and can sign with any NFL team.

It isn't immediately clear what the Ravens will do with his roster spot, but one option is using it to activate tight end Darren Waller from the suspended list.
