Ravens give WR Willie Snead 1-year, $6M extension

The Baltimore Ravens have made it a priority to give contract extensions to players they like before they’re forced to. They did it this offseason, signing kicker Justin Tucker, guard Marshal Yanda and cornerback Tavon Young long-term before they were set to hit free agency. After eight weeks in the regular season, Baltimore general manager Eric DeCosta has done it once again.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Ravens gave wide receiver Willie Snead on a one-year, $6 million extension.

The timing is a little odd, however. Players typically aren’t signed to extensions in the middle of the season, and certainly not fully guaranteed, short-term ones. But the Ravens have just $1.8 million in cap space right now, per the NFLPA’s salary cap report and could use a little breathing room in case of injury. An extension could free up some space this year depending on how the team worked the numbers.

With their need for a pass rusher, the Ravens could be making room under the salary cap to fit in a trade, though they haven’t been linked to anyone publicly. The NFL’s trade deadline is tomorrow.

Snead has 15 receptions for 223 yards and two touchdowns through seven games this season. He joined the Ravens in 2018 on a two-year, $7 million deal.
