BALTIMORE — Ravens defensive end Calais Campbell will not play in Sunday night's road game against the New England Patriots, coach John Harbaugh said Friday.
Campbell did not practice this week after suffering a calf strain on the third play from scrimmage in the team's 24-10 win Sunday over the Indianapolis Colts.
Defensive linemen Derek Wolfe, Justin Ellis and rookie Justin Madubuike all took on expanded roles with Campbell sidelined. Fellow rookie Broderick Washington and Jihad Ward, both of whom have been inactive the past two games, could also see snaps against a New England rushing offense that ranks fourth in yards per game.
Harbaugh also said that cornerback Jimmy Smith (ankle), who did not practice this week, has a "low" chance of playing. Smith, who defensive coordinator Don "Wink" Martindale on Thursday said was having a Pro Bowl-worthy season, has yet to miss a game this year.
If Smith is unable to play, newly-signed cornerback Tramon Williams could be pushed into a prominent role in his Ravens debut. Martindale on Thursday said Williams, whom the team signed Tuesday, was "ready to roll" and an addition the team could "plug and play."
Running back Mark Ingram II (ankle) practiced Friday after sitting out Thursday, Harbaugh said.
The team will release its final injury report later Friday.
