Ravens cut OLB Shane Ray

The Baltimore Ravens have begun their cuts as they look to trim the roster down from 90 players to 53 by Saturday’s deadline. While the Ravens have a number of tough decisions to make with regards to which players they should keep and which ones they can stash on the practice squad, some decisions are a lot easier.

Baltimore has waived outside linebacker Shane Ray, according to ESPN’s Jamison Hensley. The former first-round pick for the Denver Broncos joined the Ravens this offseason in an attempt to revive his stalled career. With the lack of outside linebacker depth Baltimore had after losing Terrell Suggs and Za’Darius Smith this offseason, Ray had a pretty good shot of making the Ravens’ 53-man roster to begin training camp.

But Ray had a disappointing and lackluster summer in Baltimore. Over four preseason games, Ray only notched two tackles and a half-sack in spite of playing 88 defensive snaps, mostly against second- and third-stringers. Ray also missed several practices with injuries, one of the reasons Denver let him hit free agency in the first place.

With Pernell McPhee stepping into the starting role immediately and both Tim Williams and Tyus Bowser stepping up this offseason, Ray was the odd man out. Being in the first wave of cuts shows just how far Ray was from making the Ravens’ 53-man roster. While pass rushers are considered a hot commodity in the NFL, Ray will be looking for yet another team to give him a shot based on his potential.
