Ravens cornerback sets the free agent market for Bryce Callahan

The NFL has a new highest-paid slot cornerback.

The Baltimore Ravens agreed to a three-year, $25.8 million contract with Tavon Young, setting the market for Bryce Callahan and the Chicago Bears.

That $8.6 million per year rate will shape negotiations between Ryan Pace and his slot cornerback, who might view himself as deserving more than Young earned.

Callahan is coming off of arguably the best season of his career, establishing himself as one of the league’s best slot cornerbacks.

What makes his market difficult to predict is his inability to stay healthy. Callahan has never played more than 13 games in a season, and teams like the Bears could be hesitant to invest a lot of money in a player who misses so much time.

Chicago also doesn’t have a lot of salary cap space to work with, so as Callahan’s price tag goes up, the likelihood of him re-signing with the Bears would seem to go down.
