Cleveland Browns wide receiver Jarvis Landry called Baltimore Ravens cornerback Marcus Peters a “coward” on Thursday.
The harsh words come after a video where Peters appears to spit toward Landry during Monday night’s game was shared around social media. After calling Peters a “coward,” Landry continued to say, “He knew that maybe behind my back he could do things like that, but to my face, he wouldn’t.”
Peters denied the claim in a statement released by the team.
“I didn’t spit at Jarvis. Where I come from, when you have an issue with someone, you deal with it face-to-face, man-to-man. Anyone who believes that I intentionally spit at him does not know me – plain and simple.”
Landry said he and Peters don’t have a previous history, which isn’t entirely true. Landry and fellow Browns wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. talked a little trash last season after Baltimore gave Peters a long-term contract extension. That proved to be a mistake in Week 1, seeing Peters and the Ravens’ defense shut Landry and Beckham down to a combined eight receptions on 16 targets for 83 yards and no touchdowns in a 38-6 Baltimore win.
Ultimately, only Peters knows his intentions and whether he actually spat at another player. But, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic, any accusations of spitting should be taken very seriously and will undoubtedly be looked at closer by the NFL.
