Ravens CB Jimmy Smith to miss several weeks with sprained knee

The Baltimore Ravens walked out of Miami with a big win and put the league on notice. But the Ravens also walked out with an injury to cornerback Jimmy Smith.

According to coach John Harbaugh, Smith suffered a Grade 2 knee sprain that will keep him out a few weeks. While Harbaugh noted it wasn’t a season-ending injury, he also couldn’t give a more definitive timeline.

Smith was injured in the first quarter when trying to make a tackle. Linebacker Patrick Onwuasor appeared to run into Smith, leaving him grabbing at his knee before being helped off the field by the training staff. Smith didn’t return in the Ravens’ rout of the Dolphins and was seen in street clothes after halftime.

In Smith’s place was second-year cornerback Anthony Averett. He got targeted a lot in the game and gave up a few plays but showed some flashes of what could be. Harbaugh said he was happy with how Averett played once he “got his sea legs under him.

Baltimore will likely rely on Averett to man the field opposite Marlon Humphrey when the Ravens take on the Arizona Cardinals next week in Baltimore’s home opener.
