Ravens 2019 training camp injury report – Day 3: QB Robert Griffin III injures thumb

The Baltimore Ravens are going into their 2019 season with much of their hopes resting on the shoulders of second-year quarterback Lamar Jackson. But Baltimore worked hard this offseason to re-sign Robert Griffin III to both be a primary backup to Jackson and to likely help run a bit of their unconventional offense under new coordinator Greg Roman. With Jackson running the football 156 total times last season, Griffin is an integral part of the Ravens’ offense.

On Saturday — Baltimore’s first fully-padded practice of training camp — Griffin injured his thumb on another player’s helmet. Griffin said he had gotten an X-ray but didn’t disclose the results. However, Griffin was clearly upset at practice.

Following practice, Jackson was asked about Griffin and if he was concerned. Jackson, like much of the locker room

We’ll likely get more full details at the Ravens’ next training camp practice and coach John Harbaugh has a chance to speak with the media in attendance. However, with how important Griffin is to the team’s plans this season, don’t be shocked if Baltimore is cautious with his return regardless of the results. The Ravens have opted to be cautious and sit players that likely could have returned if needed, in an effort to not risk further injury.

If Griffin did seriously injure his thumb, Baltimore will almost undoubtedly have to comb through a rather picked-over free-agent market for a new backup quarterback. The Ravens did select quarterback Trace McSorley in the 2019 NFL draft, but he’s considered to be a developmental option with upside to play both defense and special teams as well.
