Rats scurry in packs in shocking footage at Edinburgh recycling centre

Shocking footage has captured packs of large rats scurrying around a recycling centre in Edinburgh.

The video, taken by a horrified local, shows at least 10 of the rodents running out from under the bins at the Meadow Place Road recycling centre in Corstorphine at 5pm on Monday.

The rodents continue to dart around the pavement area during the 40-second clip which has since been posted online.

As the rats continue to run out from the bin the man filming can be heard saying "f****** hell" as a car drives past and the rats then flee back under the bin.

Photographs also show the bins overflowing as cardboard waste has been dumped behind it.

Local residents claim fly tipping in the area has exacerbated problems with rodents.

The resident who filmed the video said he wasn't that shocked to see rats scurrying around in the area.

He said: "This is a Edinburgh Council run recycling facility located in Corstorphine Edinburgh. It suffers almost daily fly tipping which is getting increasingly difficult to get the council to tidy to any sort of standard.

"You will be surprised to hear that it is not a shock as at night that recycling area is normally taken over by rats."

He added: "The council across the whole of the city are failing to address the problems of poor refuge collection and poor cleaning."

A Edinburgh City Council spokesperson said: “The rats at Meadow Place Road are sourcing from the grounds of a private landowner (which we understand is managed by Tesco) who have their own pest control contractor in place.

"The Council are in discussion with the landowner to resolve the issue.”

A spokesperson for Tesco said: "We have been working with pest control to resolve the situation.

"We’ve also been working with Edinburgh Council to ensure the council-owned bins are regularly emptied and maintained."
