Rats problem forces Llanelli primary school to close

A school in Llanelli is closed for a second day today (Monday, March 2) after rats were discovered at the site last week.

Swiss Valley Primary School sent pupils home from school early on Friday, February 28 after the environmental health team visited the school in the morning.

The primary school, located in Heol Beili Glas, Llanelli, had seen evidence of rats and identified possible entry points last week but the issue has not been resolved and has remained closed for the second day.

Last week, Carmarthenshire Council said the school was expected to be open on Monday after a thorough cleansing over the weekend but an update on the Swiss Valley school website informed parents that the problem had not been solved.

The message online said: "URGENT Following a visit to the school today it appears that the problem with rodents has not been resolved. Therefore the school will remain closed to pupils on MONDAY MARCH 2nd. Further updates will follow."

Swiss Valley Primary School is the second school in Llanelli to have recently closed due to rodents after Bigyn Primary School shut in September last year after finding evidence of rats.

Gareth Morgans, Carmarthenshire Council’s director of education and children’s services, said: "Our environmental health team visited the school this morning to offer assistance following evidence of a rodent. The school had already contracted professional services to deal with the issue, and this is proving effective."

He added: "Possible entry points have been identified and work will be undertaken to rectify.

"Thorough cleansing will take place. Parents are advised to check the school’s website and social media feeds for further updates."

Swiss Valley School have confirmed that it the school will reopen on Tuesday, March 3 after professional pest control and the Carmarthenshire environmental health department have agreed that the problem with rodents has been resolved and the school is safe to reopen.
