Rats, mice and pigeons found at Royal Alexandra Hospital in 2018

Rats, mice and pigeons were found at the Royal Alexandra Hospital (RAH) last year as pest control responded to 21 call outs.

The figure is an increase on 2017’s total of 16 but shows a significant downturn in the last five years, with 40 incidents recorded in 2014.

The data - released following a Freedom of Information request - confirmed that in 2015 there were 34 call outs and 28 were reported in 2016.

NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde said the Paisley hospital is “routinely inspected for the presence of pests” and responds in a proactive manner if they are discovered at the facility.

A spokesman said: “We continuously, and actively, review pest prevention and control requirements through regular audits in all hospitals including the Royal Alexandra Hospital.

“All of our sites operate a proactive service where they are routinely inspected for the presence of pests and preventative measures are in place to prevent them from entering our buildings.

“This approach significantly reduces pest issues and, in the event that staff do observe or suspect their presence, a reactive service is put in place immediately.

“Our pest control services are supplied by specialist contractors and there is communication between them and staff after any visit.

“This ensures the highest standards of environmental cleanliness are maintained and any required corrective action is taken.”

Of the 21 call outs in 2018, seven instances were because of mice, five because of rats and five because of ants.

On two occasions pest control responded to reports of the insect silverfish, once to flies and on another occasion to the presence of pigeons.

The health board has managed to drive down a problem with ants, which had dated back to 2014.

During that year there were 23 reports of ants. In 2015 that figure increased to 24.

However, the call out figure almost halved to 13 in 2016 - before dropping to four in 2017.

During the last five years the health board has spent almost £20,000 on pest control at the RAH, with £3,400 spent on tackling the issue in 2018.

The highest amount spent in any given year during that period was in 2015 when the cost climbed to £5,500.
