Ration Card Upgrade: Govt to launch “Sarthak PDS”; what it is, how it works, and how it is beneficial

The central government has announced a major initiative benefiting around 81.35 crore ration card holders across India. A new scheme titled “Sarthak PDS” has been approved to enhance transparency and curb irregularities in the public distribution system. The initiative is designed to strengthen fair price shops, modernise the PDS, and assist state bodies in the intra-state movement of food grains.

Focus on Transparency Through Technology

The scheme aims to modernise ration distribution by integrating advanced technology.

Massive Budget Allocation for Implementation

The Centre has earmarked Rs. 25,530 crore for the rollout of this scheme. The funds will be utilised over the next five years to upgrade and streamline the distribution infrastructure.

Real-Time Monitoring and Biometric Verification

The minister said the programme has been designed around three key pillars to improve efficiency, transparency and citizen engagement across the country’s food security architecture.

The first pillar, “Nirmal”, is an AI-driven real-time PDS beneficiary registry that will enable live inter-ministerial integration and cross-scheme cooperation to streamline welfare delivery and reduce duplication.

The second pillar, “ASHA”, focuses on multilingual AI-powered grievance redressal and citizen engagement. Integrated with WhatsApp and chatbot services, the platform will be scalable to handle up to three lakh interactions per day, officials said.

The third pillar, “Saksham”, is an AI-enabled supply chain management platform featuring vehicle tracking, QR-code based traceability and demand forecasting tools aimed at improving logistics efficiency and monitoring food grain movement.

A major highlight of the scheme is the introduction of real-time monitoring systems. Authorities will track the movement of food grains from warehouses to fair price shops (FPS). Additionally, a dedicated application will be launched to oversee distribution and beneficiary access.

Improved Monitoring of Distribution Process

The government will closely monitor how many beneficiaries are receiving ration supplies and whether distribution is being carried out efficiently. Online tracking mechanisms will help ensure accountability at every stage.

Towards a Transparent and Efficient System

With end-to-end digital monitoring and technological integration, the government aims to eliminate leakages and bring greater transparency to the ration distribution system. The entire process will be tracked online to ensure efficiency and fairness in delivery.
