Rating every Everton player this season with Jordan Pickford top but new signing rock bottom

Dominic Calvert-Lewin carried away Everton's two Player of the Season awards at the club's recent official awards evening.

But the Blues' top scorer is way down in eighth place in our writers' official marks for the season just ended.

Many seasonal awards offer a distorted view of a player's contributions during a season.

A strong start to a season can be overshadowed by a tame finish, while players who finish the season strongly often figure more prominently than their overall performances have dictated.

But that is not the case with our player ratings.

Our Everton writers produce marks out of 10 after every single match.

Phil Kirkbride, Adam Jones and Sam Carroll all issue marks based on players' performances that day.

They are harsh, but fair. Players have achieved 9/10 performances this season - but not often.

Leave your Everton player ratings for the season here

While one defender managed to achieve back to back 3/10 marks as the season petered out into a miserable end.

We have added up every players' marks for the season and divided them by the number of appearances they have made - to give an accurate assessment of how they have performed over the course of the campaign.

And there are one or two eye opening totals.

Here, in traditional reverse order, are Everton's player ratings for the 2020/21 season.

Josh King 5.66

Perhaps not a surprise that Josh King brings up the wooden spoon position, given that the forward never got the opportunity to actually start a match in his four month loan spell. As a result his marks are sprinkled with sixes and fives.

Bernard 5.72

Another forward to struggle by not actually starting many games. The Brazilian ended the season with successive 4/10 marks against Sheffield United and Manchester City which affected his average adversely. But his highest mark, the 8/10 awarded for his goalscoring display against Fleetwood in the Carabao Cup, was a long time ago.

Andre Gomes 5.74

A big disappointment for the Portuguese playmaker, after starting the season with a couple of sevens and a six. Five seven out of 10 displays in six matches in January were quickly overshadowed by a succession of 5/10 displays and two fours against Fulham and Aston Villa.

Mason Holgate 5.8

The defender would undoubtedly have ended the season much higher up the rankings, but wretched 3/10 marks in his last two appearances against Manchester City and Sheffield United saw him slump. A 4/10 in the home game against Aston Villa hardly helped either.

Alex Iwobi 5.91

Is he a winger? Is he a number 10? Whatever his best role Iwobi did actually return 8/10 displays against Fleetwood, Chelsea and Wolves. But he also returned plenty of 4/10 displays - including three in his last four appearances of an inconsistent campaign.

Fabian Delph 6.0

No surprise perhaps, but despite kicking off the campaign with a solid sequence of four successive 7/10 performances, Delph's problems with injuries throughout the campaign meant the midfielder found it difficult to achieve any level of consistency.

Theo Walcott 6.0

Two appearances, two 6/10 marks give him a season's average of six. Enough said.

Gylfi Sigurdsson 6.18

The Icelander was capable of 8/10 performances, four of them against Chelsea, Sheffield United, Leeds and West Brom, but also capable of fours and fives which saw him only just sneak over the 6/10 threshold.

Richarlison 6.22

The Brazilian top scored with 9/10 at Leicester, and also managed six 8s, including at Anfield to underline what he could be capable of. But like too many of his team-mates he suffered from a lack of consistency.

Seamus Coleman 6.26

8/10 performances against West Ham and Wolves sandwiched 5/10 displays at Aston Villa and against Sheffield United, underlining that consistency was an issue for the Blues skipper.

Jonjoe Kenny 6.4

The full-back managed five appearances before heading north for his loan spell in Glasgow, and his marks were actually more respectable than some of the players he left behind.

Ben Godfrey 6.47

A solid set of marks for the young defender in his debut season at Goodison Park. A lacklustre end to the campaign of two 5s and a four in his last half-dozen displays meant he ended a little lower than he might otherwise have done. Stand outs were 9s at Leeds and against Chelsea.

Tom Davies 6.48

From highs of a 9/10 at Bramall Lane to a low of 4/10 at the Etihad the young midfielder had his moments this season, just not enough them.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin 6.48

The pair are in inseparable off the pitch - and they are joined at the hip in the season's ratings, too, DCL recording an average of 6.48 just like his good pal. Calvert-Lewin started the season like a train with two 9s and an eight in his first five appearances - but in the second half of the season his marks dwindled - boosted by a rare 8/10 at West Ham.

Abdoulaye Doucoure 6.52

Like his midfield partner Doucoure started the season magnificently and remained a consistent performer up until January. He slipped a little before sustaining the broken foot which kept him out for a long spell then when he returned couldn't quite recapture the form of earlier in the campaign.

Michael Keane 6.56

The England defender actually led the way when we totted up the tallies during the March international break, Keane (6.78) topping a tight pack with Lucas Digne (6.76) and Ben Godfrey (6.73). But a 3 on the last day at Manchester City and a 4 in the home display against Spurs saw him dip.

Allan 6.57

After a sparkling start, 9, 8, 7, 8, the Brazilian saw his performance levels dip a little then spent a large chunk of the season on the sidelines injured. But he picked up his levels on his return and would have finished even higher but for a end to the campaign which saw him finish with a 5, a 6 and a 4.

Lucas Digne 6.63

The French full-back has been a paragon of consistency ever since he arrived at Everton, and while his levels this season weren't quite as good as last, they were still effective enough to see him finish third in Everton's outfield performers.

James Rodriguez 6.65

A class act when he's out on the pitch, Everton just didn't see him out there often enough. His first five appearances in an Everton shirt saw him return 8/10 every time - and while he couldn't maintain that level throughout the campaign he still produced stand-out performances against Wolves, Sheffield Wednesday, Leicester, Crystal Palace and Arsenal.

Yerry Mina 6.68

The only outfield player to top James' tally was his compatriot Yerry Mina. There were low moments - back to back 5s against Newcastle and Fulham, but they were overshadowed by the high points. At one stage of the season Mina recorded three successive 8/10 performances - in big matches, too, against Chelsea, Leicester and Arsenal.

Robin Olsen 6.72

Olsen made 11 appearances throughout the season - and while a shaky display at Old Trafford saw him record a 5/10 display he had given a 9/10 performance in his previous match at Leeds. There were 8s and a few sevens too to ensure that Everton's number two goalkeeper ended in second place in the overall rankings.

Jordan Pickford 6.72

By a curious quirk of coincidence - or maybe by virtue of the fact that so many outfield players underperformed - Everton's first choice goalkeeper finished top of the pile with the exact same mark as the man pushing him for a first team place. A 9/10 performance against Aston Villa and 8/10 displays against Wolves and Manchester City hauled Pickford back from a shaky start. He had an average season rating of just 6.12 in mid-March, but build on that to end the season with a solid 6.72.

Others

Played with only a handful of appearances were: Niels Nkonkou 7.2, Jarrad Branthwaite 7, Joao Virginia and Anthony Gordon 6.66, Moise Kean 6.33, JP Gbamin 6, Cenk Tosun 5.66
