'Rather have tiers than tears' - what you think of the new Christmas bubble rules

Boris Johnson yesterday announced that changes will be made to original Christmas bubble plans after a new stain of coronavirus is spreading in the country.

The Prime Minister revealed that there will be a new Tier 4 which London and part of the South East will go into.

He also said during a press conference that Christmas bubbles will now be restricted to one day and not five.

The ECHO asked readers what they thought of the new restrictions and while most thought they were just and needed, others were concerned about those working Christmas day.

Polly Jolly said: "Yes, sadly, I agree with the revised rules, which impact on me & mine just as much as anyone else. Rather have tiers than tears."

Lorna Adair agreed: "Yes people need to understand how bad the virus is.

"You can always use modern technology to meet up and help take some of the loneliness away.

"With the vaccine being rolled out hopefully people can make Easter the Christmas they didn’t have ."

Dave Hollywood agreed with the rules but thought the timing wasn’t great, he commented: "I agree with protecting everyone just not the timing of the change of it will screw up a lot of people's Christmas plans."

Jennie Green said it’s about keeping people safe: "It’s so hard obviously people including myself want to see their friends and family over the festive period however people including myself also want to keep their friends and family safe from the virus."

Shelley Cormie added: "Yes I agree with the decision. We as a family made our decision to keep away from each other back in early November. The signs were all there for us to see!"

And Allan Carruthers said: "Just doing it for our safety, nothing wrong with them looking after us. We just need to listen."

However some said that the new plans are ‘unfair’. Many claim there is a flaw and that those working Christmas day, particularly in key worker jobs, are now not able to have a proper Christmas with family or friends.

Heather Grimshaw said: "I think it’s unfair. My mother is a care worker who is working on Christmas Day so our one day meeting had been planned for Boxing Day.

"Now due to the new rules we are unable to do so and will all spend the Christmas period apart."

While Cathy Rutherford added: "No I don’t agree for the sheer fact that there’s lots of people working on Christmas Day, so they have to miss out on seeing their family over Christmas, it’s not fair on them. It should be at least 2 days."

A third Emma Aint Wright said: "Think it’s unfair he’s only made it Christmas Day and changed it less than a week before Christmas.

"Some key workers are working Christmas Day thinking they can have another day for family.

"Think he shouldn’t of said Christmas Day and said ‘one’ other day you can choose."

Emma Garnett commented: "Don't mind but they can't just say to meet xmas day.

"Some people will work xmas day. My xmas day is always boxing day, when I get to see my little boy too. So as long as they say just one day over xmas period, they can't state a day!!”

And Julie Lightfoot Kinsella said: "Don’t see why we should be punished for other hot spot places."
