Rathcoole studios kids urge others to stay Covid safe in new video they made for minister

Young people from Rathcoole estate and further afield have been praised for their new video encouraging others to stay Covid safe.

The clip was filmed at NACN Coole Studios following a request from the Communities Minister on a zoom call to the group.

Dee Crooks at Coole Studios, which is lotto funded, said young people from as far and wide as Millisle, Carrickfergus, Ballysillan, Monkstown and Rathcoole were involved from start to finish on the project.

In it, the incredibly creative youngsters urge everyone to keep their distance, wear a face covering, download the StopCovid NI app and wash their hands.

"Together we can all do it," they said.

Communities Minister Carál Ní Chuilín said: "I recently met with the team at NACN Coole Studios and, after seeing the incredible work they do in empowering young people through creativity, asked them to consider doing a video on staying safe during the Covid-19 crisis.

"I am so proud of what they have achieved with this work and delighted that they, along with our T:BUC Young Ambassadors and the Street Soccer NI team, have delivered these very important messages on staying safe."

NACN project manager Dee added: "There was two groups involved. We have a singing academy and then we have a group of young people who make film so all the editing was done by them.

"I think there's a lot of young people that aren't really taking this serious. During lockdown we just didn't meet at all and were still having our zoom meetings and had noticed there was still a large amount of young people going about the area in groups.

"This is something the young people brought up themselves so maybe if it's young people making these things, it's more inclined for other young people to take heed.

"It's great the department has recognised the value in young people. We are very appreciative of the department giving us the opportunity to show what young people can do in communities."
