Rate the Sunderland players after their Wembley penalty heartbreak against Portsmouth

Sunderland may have been defeated at Wembley, but boy did they make a game of it.

The Black Cats and Portsmouth could not be separated after 120 minutes of action and, just like 1998, it was penalty heartbreak for Sunderland at the national stadium.

Lee Cattermole, who's had a brilliant season to date, missed the only penalty of an otherwise flawless back and forth of spot kicks.

But the shoot-out was only a small part of a dramatic and thrilling game of football that Pompey boss Kenny Jackett rightly described as a great advert for League One.

Sunderland took the lead through a great Aiden McGeady free-kick in the first half but, after dominating the first half, lost their ascendancy in the second and Portsmouth took advantage.

Nathan Thompson equalised with eight minutes of normal time remaining, ensuring another 30 minutes of extra time was needed.

And with Sunderland looking desperately tired, it looked bleak for Jack Ross' side when Jamal Lowe fired Portsmouth ahead in the 114th minute, only for Sunderland to show fight and character, equalising through McGeady's second with one minute to spare.

But who was your Sunderland man of the match today? Have your say and rate the players below.
