Rate cut hopes dimmed

The Guardian says the head of the Bank of England is opposed to further rate cuts, although interestingly he didn't want the last one either. The Guardian believes the smart money is on no further cuts in the immediate future; The Times concurs, while the Daily Telegraph carries criticism of the Bank's committee from a leading economist.

There's more on the unemployment increase I flagged yesterday. The Times prefers to frame it as a story about benefit claimants increasing but carries the same story, while The Independent notes that the increase is keeping pay claims in check.

The Independent is also among those carrying the story about pensions - it seems not everybody who opted out of the State Earnings Related Pension Scheme and into private or occupational schemes in the 1980s was wise to do so. Also on company pensions, the Daily Telegraph has criticisms for Tony Blair personally in an open letter from an aggrieved pensioners' group.

The Daily Mail says postal costs are about to skyrocket for business as well as everyone else, although the BBC carries a cheerier story about phone costs going down, which they'll need to once voice over IP, that's Internet Protocol, allows everyone to make cheap or even free calls piggybacking their Internet connection - either the land-line costs go down or they price themselves out of the market.

Oh, and if you hadn't noticed, The Times confirms that your future workforce is getting its 'A' level results today. Everybody's denying that they're getting easier but apparently everyone's a genius these days. I blame the healthier diet...
