Just a day after the release of Ryan Murphy’s new Netflix series Ratched, viewers are already demanding the commissioning of a second season.

The series serves as a prequel to One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, the classic novel by Ken Kesey that was adapted into a film starring Jack Nicholson in 1975.

Ratched stars Sarah Paulson in the role of nurse Mildred Ratched, played in the film by Louise Fletcher.

The series is set in 1947, several years before the events of Cuckoo’s Nest. Some fans have suggested that this leaves ample room for more seasons.

“I want a second season #Ratched” wrote one fan on Twitter.

“I’m ready for a second season now,” said another.

Someone else excitedly wrote: “OMG THE ENDING OF RATCHED I NEED S2 NOW.”

Despite this clamouring from some fans for more episodes of Ratched, the reviews for the series have been decidedly mixed.

In a four-star review for The Independent, Alexandra Pollard described the series as “reliably camp” and “lavish”, adding: “There’s something self-consciously Hitchcockian about Ratched, though it subverts the director’s frequent disdain for women.

“Ultimately, this is a thoughtful, moving examination of the repercussions of trauma, and a reclamation of queerness and femininity from a genre and source material that has treated both with contempt.”
