Ratchanok, Pornpawee advance in China

Ratchanok Intanon and Pornpawee Chochuwong eased into the women's singles second round of the US$700,000 BWF China Open in Fuzhou on Wednesday.

Sixth-seeded Ratchanok needed just 27 minutes to beat Lyanny Alessandra Mainaky 21-9, 21-8 at Haixia Olympic Sports Center.

Unseeded compatriot Pornpawee also had a short workout against Vaishnavi Reddy Jakka after she cruised past the Indian 21-12, 21-16 in 29 minutes.

In Thursday's second round, Ratchanok will play China's Han Yue, while Pornpawee meets fourth seed Chen Yufei of China.

Busanan Ongbamrungphan, who won her women's singles first round match against Taiwan's Lee Chia-hsin on Tuesday, faces a tough assignment against third seed Pusarla V Sindhu of India on Thursday.

Nitchaon Jindapol was the only Thai first round casualty in the women's singles event, losing to South Korea's Sung Ji-Hyun on Tuesday.

Jongkolphan Kititharakul and Rawinda Prajongjai had to dig deep to progress to the last 16 stage of the women's doubles event.

The Thai eighth seeds dropped the first game against unseeded Taiwanese pair of Hsu Ya-ching and Hu Ling-fang but fought back to win the next two and march ahead with a 11-21, 25-23, 21-11 victory.

They play China's Li Wenmei and Zheng Yu in the second round on Thursday.

Another Thai pair Puttita Supajirakul and Sapsiree Taerattanachai, who received a walkover in the first round, play fifth seeds Mayu Matsumoto and Wakana Nagahara of Japan on Thursday.

The Thai interest in the men's singles event ended on Wednesday when Suppanyu Avisinghanon crashed out in the first round after a 18-21, 21-14, 28-30 loss to unseeded Kazumasa Sakai of Japan on Wednesday.

Earlier, Kantaphon Wangcharoen bowed out to China's sixth seed Chen Long on Tuesday.

Both men's doubles pairs failed to get past the first hurdle on Wednesday when Kittinupong Kedren and Dechapol Puavaranukroh lost to Wahyu Nayaka and Ade Yusuf Santoso of Indonesia 15-21, 23-21, 17-21 and Bodin Isara and Maneepong Jongjit bowed out to fourth seeds Takeshi Kamura and Keigo Sonoda of Japan 18-21, 9-21.

However Dechapol and playing partner Sapsiree are still in the the mixed doubles competition and play Zhang Nan and Li Yinhui of China in the second round on Thursday.
