Rat 'the size of a rabbit' pictured outside branch of Pizza Hut

A rat "the size of a rabbit or big cat " has been caught on camera outside a branch of Pizza Hut .

A woman said she was passing by the eaterie with her daughter when they spotted the "huge" creature on a patch of grass outside the restaurant.

The woman, who did not want to be named, said: "It was huge, the size of a rabbit or a big cat .

"Problem is, there is so much rubbish around the bins, and they don't get emptied enough I'm guessing."

The woman said it was the first time she had seen a rat at that location, but added that she would be on the lookout for them now she knows they are there.

LeicestershireLive contacted Pizza Hut Restaurants for a comment about the incident, at its Barkby Thorpe Lane branch.

A spokesperson said: "Health and safety is a priority for us and we have taken swift action to address this incident.

"We constantly monitor our Huts, including regular visits from our independent inspectors to ensure they adhere to our high standards of food safety and cleanliness.

"We are currently undertaking a full investigation.”

The Barkby Thorpe Lane branch of Pizza Hut got a five star hygiene rating -

the highest possible - at its most recent inspection.

The story comes a day after a report of "rats as big as cats" spotted in a Braunstone Gate car park.
