'Rat-infested' Edinburgh alcove yards away from Fringe goers sparks outrage

An alcove on Fleshmarket Close, just yards away from Edinburgh Fringe performers, has drawn negative attention for its unclean state.

The alcove, which is opposite the Jinglin' Geordie pub in the city centre, was littered with broken glass and needles, according to Edinburgh resident Brian.

Flies and rodents were also said to be present in the alcove.

He posted the photo on Twitter to share his disappointment, tagging the Edinburgh City Council, Edinburgh Central MSP Angus Robertson, and Director of Place at City of Edinburgh Council Paul Lawrence.

Brian wrote: "Horrendous smell of urine, flies and rodents present, broken glass and discarded needles… all while families walk past.

"Absolutely disgusting and dangerous."

Edinburgh Council Help, an Edinburgh City Council customer service Twitter account replied to Brian's tweet stating: "I have reported this under reference 101000808840, and attached your comments and photo."

Brian also told Edinburgh Live that the alcove was in a worse state when he walked past today than it was yesterday.

He said: "It’s definitely having a detrimental effect on the local businesses, who have been reporting the issue for months with little to nothing being done."
