In life, it’s not always where you came from, but where you are currently in your journey and where you’ll end up if you keep striving. For Rasul Douglas, that statement sums up his entire career. Once looked at as an afterthought and a training camp body, Douglas has survived injury and attrition at the cornerback position, allowing him to become the Eagles’ most reliable outside defender.
Heading into Sunday’s game against the Jets, Douglas will be the healthiest cornerback the Eagles have and probably the team’s best player at the position currently. The Eagles depth chart is mangled with more names on the injured list than there are bodies available to play.
Douglas spent the offseason getting stronger, and as he told The Athletic recently, he’s just focused on staying healthy and getting better.
“I don’t have a secret,” Douglas said of staying healthy. “I hope you’re not trying to get me injured for saying that.”
Since being drafted by the Eagles in 2017, Eagles’ cornerback’s have missed 59 games due to injury, while Douglas has yet to miss an opportunity to play, logging 1,186 regular-season snaps. That’s more than any other cornerback outside of Jalen Mills who is currently rehabbing a foot injury.
The tough, athletic and physically imposing cornerback has now become the Eagles’ best cornerback and definitely the teams most reliable.
“I don’t know about the top cornerback, but just playing,” Douglas said. “The more reps I get, the better I get.”
A guy once considered an extra player or possible addition to trade has now earned top billing in the Eagles secondary.
