Rashan Gary records first NFL sack, Darnell Savage grabs first NFL interception

The Green Bay Packers’ 27-16 win over the Denver Broncos on Sunday at Lambeau Field featured career firsts for their top two draft picks from the 2019 draft.

Edge rusher Rashan Gary recorded his first career sack, while safety Darnell Savage grabbed his first career interception.

Gary, the 12th overall pick in the 2019 draft, beat Broncos right tackle Elijah Wilkinson and sacked Joe Flacco on a first-down play in the fourth quarter.

Gary got around a chip attempt and eventually muscled through Wilkinson to get to Flacco:

Gary also delivered a fumble recovery in the first half after Preston Smith strip-sacked Flacco. The takeaway led to a touchdown.

Savage’s interception halted a drive inside Green Bay territory just one possession after the Broncos closed the gap to 24-16 in the third quarter.

Flacco’s errant pass over the middle was initially ruled incomplete. However, coach Matt LaFleur challenged the play, and a review showed Savage getting both arms under the football and completing the catch.

It was the only interception of the game.

Had the play been ruled correctly on the field, Savage would have been credited with a return to the 41-yard line. The Packers eventually punted the ball back to the Broncos, but Denver never seriously threatened again.

The Packers also got a clean game from second-round pick Elgton Jenkins, who started at left guard. He had a key block on Aaron Jones’ first-half touchdown run.
