'Rarest' £2 coins worth up to £35 in circulation - check your change now

People in the UK are being urged to check their change for some rare £2 coins that could be worth over 17 times their value.

This month, it's officially been 25 years since the iconic bi-metal £2 coin we all recognise entered circulation, after being first struck in November 1998.

And there are 63 different designs for this one coin, with around 37 of them still in circulation, according to the experts at Coinhunter - so it's worth having a root around in your spare change to see if you have any.

The remaining 26 were issued as "commemorative coins" and never entered circulation, the Mirror reports.

Here are the coin designs you should be looking out for, that could be worth up to £35.

These coins were created to celebrate the XVII Commonwealth Games (Press Association)

In 2002, Manchester hosted the seventeenth Commonwealth Games, and several £2 coins were created to mark the event.

Currently, the most sought-after is the Northern Ireland version, followed by Scotland and then England.

Each of the coins has the same base design featuring a runner holding a flag, but it's different for each country.

The Northern Ireland version, of which there are 485,500 in circulation, has sold for around £35 on eBay in the past few months.

The England version has 650,500 in circulation, with 771,750 copies of the Scottish version available.

These could sell on eBay for around £8 to £28, respectively.

  • Queen Elizabeth II £2: Commonwealth Games N. Ireland - worth £35
  • Queen Elizabeth II £2: Commonwealth Games Scotland - worth £8
  • Queen Elizabeth II £2: Commonwealth Games England - worth £28

Other popular £2 coins that are pointed out in the index include the 2008 Olympic Handover Ceremony coin, which was struck to mark the games being handed over from Beijing to London.

However this coin doesn't fetch quite as much, with an average price of around £4 on sites such as eBay.

Taking fifth place is the 2015 First World War (Navy) £2 coin which was created to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the First World War and pays tribute to the Royal Navy.

Again, the coin is worth around £3 to £4 if sold to a collector.
