'Rare treat' of cannabis lands gym instructor in court

A trainee gym instructor had cannabis as "a rare treat," city magistrates heard.

The drug was found after police officers stopped a car on Alfreton Road on September 19.

Kasey Hodge, 22, admitted having the drug which will now be destroyed. He was given a six-month conditional discharge but must pay £85 prosecution costs and £21 government tax.

Sarah Roberts, mitigating, said that he had never been in trouble before and has been an apprentice at a sports centre for 18 months. He has a job offer at the end of it.

"He is not a regular user of cannabis and it was a rare treat on his way to a friend's house.

"He has to remain physically fit and so it really is occasional use in his case," added Miss Roberts for Hodge of Annesley Grove, Nottingham.

Sanjay Jerath, prosecuting, said that Hodge was a passenger in a car stopped at 8.50pm.

"A small bag of cannabis was in his right trouser pocket. In the passenger footwell, there were two small bags of one ounce of cannabis. The drugs were for personal use," added Mr Jerath.
