Rare sighting of Arctic walrus spotted on South Wales coast just 100 miles from Bristol

A walrus has been spotted on the Welsh coast thousands of miles from its home in the Arctic.

The creature was found lying on rocks near Broad Haven South beach, Pembrokeshire - some 100 miles from Bristol - and it is thought to be the same one seen off the coast of County Kerry last week.

Experts believe the animal floated thousands of miles from its Arctic home while sleeping on an iceberg. And its arrival has been flagged as another warning sign of the growing climate emergency, reports Wales Online.

People have now been urged to keep their distance from the 'whopper' of a walrus, because the animals are a 'sensitive species'.

Sea Rescue Ireland said: "The tired, young Walrus last spotted on Valentia Island, County Kerry last Sunday has been spotted in Wales.

It's believed the creature could have floated thousands of miles on an iceberg (PA)

"The Arctic voyager reappeared and Marine Life Rescue is keeping a close eye.

"The walrus has since gone back out to sea and is undoubtedly tired after another long journey, so if you spot it in your area, please remember that this is a sensitive species and to avoid disturbance."

Cleopatra Browne of Welsh Marine Life Rescue told the BBC: "It was about the size of a cow.

"It was a whopper. I've seen them on telly and the news but it was huge."

Walruses are more often seen in the Arctic, and are not usually seen this far south.

RSPCA animal rescue officer Ellie West, who checked the animal, said: "He was resting and, although appearing slightly underweight, thankfully he wasn't displaying any signs of sickness or injury.

"This is an incredibly rare sighting and these big, beautiful animals never usually venture so far south. We believe this may be a juvenile who has travelled down this way in search of food."

People are being urged to "keep their distance" and not approach the animal.
