
Visitors stroll through fields filled with rare ruby-red buckwheat flowers that are now almost in full bloom in the town of Minowa, Nagano Prefecture. The blossoms at the 4.2-hectare site -- about the size of Tokyo Dome -- are in bloom until early October.
Buckwheat plant flowers are usually white. However, Shinshu University engineered a type of Himalayan buckwheat that has red flowers and made the plant suitable for the Japanese climate.
The town has been cultivating buckwheat for more than 40 years to utilize idle land and develop local products.
"We want people to enjoy the flowers while taking measures to mitigate the spread of the coronavirus," a town official said.
