Rare pink supermoon will appear in the sky this Wednesday

Lockdown Britain can look to the skies for entertainment this week, when there will be a rare “pink” supermoon.

The first full moon of spring, traditionally called the pink moon, will be the biggest and brightest of 2020.

In the early hours of Wednesday, the moon will be at its closest point to Earth, appearing 30% brighter and 14% bigger than at its furthest.

Emily Drabek-Maunder, an astronomer at the Royal Observatory Greenwich, said: “It’s going to be spectacular.”

But it will be its usual golden colour, not pink.

The first full moon after the spring equinox is called a pink moon after “moss pink” a wildflower which blooms in North America at this time of year.

Ms Drabek-Maunder said: “The supermoon is a great opportunity for everyone to appreciate the beauty of the natural world.

"While the night sky seems constant to us, we can witness the changing universe by taking notice of the moon.”

At its closest point, the moon is just over 220,000 miles from Earth, almost 30,000 miles closer than at its furthest point.
